The life, the person and the art of Oscar Wilde have already been subjects of many studies and essays. The life is now as well-known as we can expect it to be. The art, as art, has been sufficiently discussed. About the person, however, not so much in itself as in relation to the art, there is, I think, still something new to say. Therein lies a problem, and I believe it has not yet been solved. Perhaps I may even say that, though perhaps suspected here and there, it has not yet been even clearly put.

Yet it is not difficult to put it clearly. Wilde was, typically, predominantly or characteristically, what is called an aesthete. He himself thought so, and most have so thought. Now an aesthete is a man who bases the highest interest of his life in the contemplation of beauty, as distinct from the creation of it. His attitude towards life, which is essentially action, and towards art, which is a product, is substantially passive and unproductive. When therefore we find a man who is described as an aesthete to be an active artist, we find what is patently a contradiction in terms. But, as we do find it, we cannot believe it to be a real contradiction. The problem must have some solution. Either we have put it wrongly or the case is a very special one, a departure from some norm. Our solution will lie either in discovering where the problem has been wrongly put, if it so happened, or how that departure from a norm, and what norm, is to be explained.

We shall begin by investigating whether the aesthete has been rightly defined. We shall pass on to investigating whether Wilde was indeed an aesthete. And, as we have not to prove that he was an active artist, since his works are there to prove it, we shall then, if our two investigations are affirmative in their results, have to explain how it is that he was one.

A vida, a pessoa e a arte de Oscar Wilde já foram temas de muitos estudos e ensaios. A vida agora é tão conhecida quanto podemos esperar que seja. A arte, como arte, já foi suficientemente discutida. Sobre a pessoa, porém, não tanto em si mesma quanto em relação à arte, ainda há, creio eu, algo novo a dizer. É aí que reside um problema, e creio que ainda não foi resolvido. Talvez eu possa até dizer que, embora porventura suspeite aqui e ali, ainda não foi nem mesmo colocado claramente. 

No entanto, não é difícil colocá-lo claramente. Wilde era, tipicamente, predominantemente ou caracteristicamente, o que é chamado de esteta. Ele mesmo pensava assim, e muitos assim o pensaram. Ora, um esteta é o homem que fundamenta o maior interesse de sua vida na contemplação da beleza, como algo diferente da sua criação. A sua atitude perante a vida, que é essencialmente acção, e perante a arte, que é um produto, é substancialmente passiva e improdutiva. Portanto, quando encontramos um homem descrito como esteta como um artista activo, descobrimos o que é evidentemente uma contradição nos termos. Mas, como o encontramos, não podemos acreditar que seja uma contradição real. O problema deve ter alguma solução. Ou o colocamos de maneira errada ou o caso é muito especial, um desvio de alguma norma. A nossa solução consistirá em descobrir onde o problema foi mal colocado, se é que foi isso que aconteceu, ou como esse desvio de uma norma, e que norma, deve ser explicado. 

Começaremos por investigar se o esteta foi correctamente definido. Continuaremos a investigar se Wilde era de facto um esteta. E, como não temos que provar que ele foi um artista activo, já que suas obras estão aí para prová-lo, devemos então, se nossas duas investigações forem afirmativas nos seus resultados, ter que explicar como é que ele o era.
