I hope that the reader has understood clearly that there is a difference between imagination and intellectual originality. They seem, it is true, to have no difference at all.
I hope, moreover, that the reader has so far followed me as to know the difference between intellect when used as the means, in a work of imagination, and intellect when it is the heart of the work. If we may use the word plot in this sense, I may say that whereas, in a work of imagination, the plot is an invented thing, in the intellectual work, the plot is, less simply, an intellectual operation, and in a scientific work the plot is, least simply, the whole range of unoriginal information which it is purposed to publish. In the first case the plot underlies the words; in the second case, it is half contained in the words for it [is] the logic they bear; in the third case, it is almost the words themselves.
