I thither dragged my wandering steps. 

                                      Uprose,

Abrupt and sudden, a tremendous frame

Of shades that darkened to unvisioned night –

Layer on layer black’ning, like the clouds,

Mothers of thunder, that far-stretching slain

An evening’s radiance. Dim and awful forms,

Columns of night, and visionary curves

Serrated obelisks, and towers of mist

My sight enchaining dazzled. I opprest

Looked up, looked down, but greatness stood above

And greatness stood below; I glanced around

And greatness saw unequalled, vague, unsure –

Buttress upstarted, towers and pillars huge

With my stained sigh augmented, and I paused

For darkness endless crush my visual sense.
