Fernando Pessoa – “The ship sails up the broad river…”

[BNP/E3, 49A1 – 21-22]

_______

The ship sails up the broad river

And in the ship that sails up to broad river

The problem lies of to-day and ever.

_______

The ship _____ river

And in its passing and going

Lies the problem that is flowing.

Through human minds for ever.

_______

The ship _____ river

And it goes serene and fair

But the problem deep of how and where

Is here as {…} ever

_______

The ship _____ river

But if could ever explain

What there is again and again

That touch us ever and ever.

After March 21, 1906

date of poem

on Shakespeare

[22r]

The ship sails up the broad river

Would that I know what it means

And the meaning of all that is in this

Which has haunted men for ever.

_______

The ship sails up the broad river;

I know what is ship and is river

I know why the ship is sailing

I know {…}

But oh that I could know

What is backward if this forever

Could I know the mystery of them

In the ship that sails up the broad river.

[22v]

Oh the torture of this and of its meaning

The ship that sails up the broad river!
