Fernando Pessoa – “What should we love, what should we reverse?…”

[BNP/E3, 49A2 – 17]

29/4/09.

What should we love, what should we reverse?

Life is not worth neither laugh[1] nor tear

Not a slung of shoulders, of disdain born,

But a mute, †, empty scorn.

What do we deserve? What must we obey?

What is † which to the soul to say?

It is |idle| to him, for we know not why

And, even as wish, idle to desire to[2] die.

[1] laugh /sigh\
[2] idle to desire to /idle een to wish to\
