Fernando Pessoa – “The |sense| to be subtle…”

[BNP/E3, 49A2 – 48v]

The |sense| to be subtle and {…} to shadows

To feel the minute {…} in the change

To be loved unto woes,

To make the common by attention strange;

_______

____________________________________________________

The sense to be subtle in the division[1]

Of mind, a follower[2] of shad and lure,

The will to content innerness by vision

__________

One {…} transition

Interception of our many-souls (?)[3]

And oft at charting them in words.

______________________________________________________

Eye subtle unto shadow and woe and keen

In the slitting to {…}

The sense to be conscious of consciousness

A thinker and our feelings, give to range

|From joy not joylessly into distress|

Accurate to know the fixed points of the change,

_______________________________________________________

To know the feeling and the thought as word[4]

_______________________________________________________

Then things do make the first, the disease

Of soul that parts are

_______________________________________________________

This is the soul division and disease

That parts are

_______________________________________________________

With an immediate placing at the best,

Garland into |soul|, the flowers of change.
