Even as the moon links not upon the moonlight sun
But is the earth’s by its immediate light;[1]
Even so our souls {…} do not our true sight
Truth in the real presence |and delight.|
_______
We know that truth is light yet our light is not
The truth’s truth but a shadow-light reflected
From[2] something such-that, yet not-lie, that lies not
Yet his because in it truth’s unintended.
_______
That around light from which our life the moan,
Ourselves sun-known unto darker day,
Is all the needs and fathoms we possess, the known
Shade of the unknown, thinking’s pure[3] prey,
The truer God that lives within our God.[4]
And the name God we call the truth we

Poetry is the twilight where the Soul
Can dream, not actual to the prose of day,
Now to the wise of the night, a while
Of unseen pleasure, in the sense[6] astray.
_______
And because poetry is twilight I
Preach to your souls[7] of souls this truth all time:
That neither we the songs of musing
In this of joy the greatest through and through.
_______
No; for if poetry the twilight be,
Joy is too †[8], pain too black of heart,
To give the mixed sense of the poetry
The sense-a-thinking[9] of the poetry’s art
The thought, pain-joy song I greatest own
The pain-joy song is greatest I do damn
The better twilight is to me the dawn.
And pain’s joy’s greatest. My thought is damn.[10]
