Fernando Pessoa – “Even as the…”

[BNP/E3, 49A2 – 51]

Even as the camber neither earth’s nor sky’s

|Stands| in the ascend of the ceased[1] rain

A hope, between reality and thought[2] lies

A torment the moment of the |ceased|[3] pain.

_______

So from this verse, with truth imposing, aught

Many be whipped to {…}

That to me perplexed[4] seem may give the not

And futile {…}

______________________________________________________

Like mistaken † on |the|[5] oak, all love

Is but a twoness striving to seem one;

And the plant sense of oak {…} and {…} mercy grow

Unconscious of {…}

_______

Yet we know well that see that oak is oak

And {…} though it be the oak’s is {…}

And if the sense of eyes either awake

It had awakened to {…} /awaked to the twoness\[6]

_______

When such things we must be parasite,

And yet its nothingness of life is not

A success with the {…}

Nor gives that is save in notlife and -self[7].

[51v]

Last sonnet of “Witter in Hope” series

_______

I do not know what truth this[8] false untruth

Of this poor verse of the {…} world may own,

Nor if this flowered plant bears also a fruit

Unto the true reality unknown.

Over ->

_______

|Even as Gama[9] when he met de Cape

In storm {…}|

____________________________________________________

The † that lives outside the oak

Loves vivid the oak’s life; a unity

And links their twoness to reality.

Anthology’s God’s eye

Sees then a newness.
